The difference is what the boards sit on
The quickest way to board a loft is to screw the boards straight onto the joists. It is what most quotes are for, and it quietly undoes the insulation you already paid for.

270mmLegs stand on the joists and lift the floor clear of the full depth. The insulation keeps working, the eaves keep their airflow, and you still get a floor you can walk on.

The questions we get asked most
Will boarding my loft ruin the insulation?
It will if the boards go straight onto the joists, because they squash the insulation to about the depth of the timber. We fit raised legs so the floor sits clear of the full 270mm and the insulation carries on working.
Is my loft strong enough to board?
Most are, for storage. Ceiling joists are sized to hold a ceiling rather than a floor, so the survey checks the span and depth before we quote. If yours needs strengthening we will tell you at the survey rather than on the day.
How long does it take?
Most lofts are a day. Bigger ones, or jobs where old insulation comes out first, can run into a second day. You will know which before we start.
Do I need to empty the loft first?
It helps, but you do not have to. We can clear it as part of the job and take the waste away with us.
Do I need planning permission?
No. Boarding a loft for storage is not a building alteration. A loft conversion is a different matter entirely, and that is a different trade.
What if I have spray foam up there?
We remove it. Worth knowing that only about a quarter of mortgage lenders will lend on a house with spray foam in the roof, so if you are thinking of selling it is worth dealing with. Once it is out, the loft needs insulating again, which we do at the same time.
Do you cover my area?
We are based near Cambridge and cover about an hour in every direction, which takes in Peterborough, Huntingdon, Ely, the Fens, and into Suffolk and Hertfordshire. If you are on the edge of that, ask anyway.
